sunny day shorts

More sewing from Kids Clothes Week last week, and another free pattern from Oliver + S!

These are the Sunny Day Shorts and they really are a perfect little shorts pattern.  They were so quick to make and they look really nice on.  I think next time I might add some details like pockets or piping but I wanted to get these done quickly as the wee man was in serious need of some new shorts as we were down to one pair that fitted him properly - not enough in the hot weather we've been having!

I used the same organic blue cotton I used for his reversible bucket hat so they make a nice matching set.  The only thing I'm a bit disappointed about is that they won't fit him for long.  I cut the 6-9 month size as although he is almost 9 months I just thought they would fit him a bit longer.  However they're pretty snug on him.  Lesson learned - I need to use his measurements rather than the age guide just as I would if sewing for myself.

Sizing asides I love these shorts and can't wait to make up some more.  I had also been working on a t-shirt for Harris but I'm not happy with the way the bindings are attached.  I followed the instructions but don't like the results so I'm going to have to unpick rather than waste the jersey.  So that's it for KCW from me.  Not as productive as many people seem to have been but I'm really happy with 3 finished items in one week! I liked the motivation of sewing along, and sewing for an hour a day, and I'm really enjoying sewing children's clothes now.  Next up though - I'm hoping some me-sewing will resume shortly!

  1. The shorts are so cute! They look so comfy and soft,I'm sure he will wear them happily. There are lots of fun things you can do with a shorts pattern. You can add piping, contrast panels at side seams, contrast patch pockets, cargo style pockets, contrast fold up hem ... And 3 items a week is quite an accomplishment, so well done!

  2. So cute! Now that I know I won't have a girl to sew pretty dresses for, I'm starting to look at boy's patterns. I don't have time just now, but am bookmarking these for next summer! They seem like a quick and easy make. Hope you get the tee sorted. Let me know how you get on, as I quite fancied that pattern for the baby.

    1. Thanks Helen! They're definitely a quick and easy sew, plus the pdf is a really simple one to put together. I'll let you know on the tee - I also have the See Kate Sew raglan tee to try so I'll compare the 2.

    1. aw thanks Jenna! It did involve a lot of evening sewing and not spending much time with my husband - so not really doable, or desirable, every week!

    1. thanks kirsty! I'm quite surprised by how much I enjoy children's sewing. I thought it would be more fiddly but so far I'm just finding it quicker and I'm enjoying thinking of what to sew next and what extra details I can start adding.

  5. I used to make my kids matching shorts and hats - I wouldn't get away with it now, at 26 and 24 they're unlikely to wear them! Yours are very cute :)

    1. Thanks Kath! Sorry for the terribly late reply. I'm not sure about the 'as soon as I need to' bit though haha! I'm going to try and plan ahead a bit this year, that is start making summer shorts & tees in March/April rather than last minute.

  7. It is such fun making clothes for little kids. I used to make matching top-and-shorts sets for my boys when they were little; long time ago now! These are really cute :)
